Mariotti: “Give him a chance”

Published by Joshua Pollock at 5:59 pm under Beisbol

Bandwagoners are one of my most loathed entities sports has to offer. Fenway Park was not brimming with people until they became a perennial contender. Hell, look at 2006, when the Sox missed the playoffs. Check out the stands in September footage! Today, Jay Mariotti has called out the cubs for having “fickle” fans. The article is genius because everything is spot on. This, of course, is in relation to Cubbies fans being up in arms about the signing of Jim Edmonds. I was at the game on Tuesday night, and when Soriano cracked that huge homer, it was as if the month of April never mattered to them.

To the Cubs’ defense though, Wrigley has always been packed despite their lovable loser image. Which is more than the White Sox can say.

In defense of my Cub fan brethren, the Wrigley stands were not nearly so packed throughout the dire decade of the 1990s. And those people in the stands who cheer for every home run? They’re only cheering because the home run distracted them from checking their e-mail on their Blackberries.

That said, I am not a fan of the Edmonds signing and I believe Soriano’s on-field performance has been more fickle than the fans this season.
